| L’OREAL FIRST HALF 2006 RESULTS L’Oreal, the world’s largest cosmetics maker, said first-half profit increased 22 percent as European shoppers bought luxury skin brands including. Net income climbed to 1.09 billion euros ($1.4 billion) from 892 million euros a year earlier, Paris-based L’Oreal said today. Sales rose 8.7 percent to 7.79 billion euros, the company said. L’Oreal sold more luxury skin-care products, which carry higher margins, by increasing marketing spending and expanding its lines. Sales in Western Europe picked up, while revenue in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia surged as Chief Executive Officer Jean-Paul Agon entered new markets. Growth in China and Indonesia boosted Asian sales. Profit will rise more than 10 percent this year, Agon said today. Professional hair products, hair color and products under the Matrix label sold well in Brazil and Chile. L’Oreal is working to get more sales from luxury brands to compete with Procter & Gamble Co. The company this year paid 652 million pounds for Body Shop International Plc, the U.K. retailer of natural beauty products.

AVOID WEEKEND WORKING Owner-managers of small and medium-sized companies avoid working at the weekends by cramming more hours in from Monday to Friday, according to a new research. A survey for Barclays Bank found 43% of owner-managers said they would not now work weekends, compared with 36% in 2003. Some 51% of owners saw a desire to retain control and, 67%, the lack of anyone else able to undertake the task, as the main barriers to reducing their hours. Janet Ginnings, who runs Janet Ginnings Hair and Beauty, in Myfair, London, agreed with the research. "It is important for me to have time for my family and also for rest and relaxation. The salon is open on Saturdays but I tend not to work then. I have a good team of staff that I trust so that things run smoothly" she said. |

DIRECTOR'S MORE LIKELY TO HEAD PROFITABLE BUSINESSES Female company directors are more likely to be involved in profitable businesses than their male counterparts, according to the last analysis of Britain's 3.9m British directors by global information company Experian. It found 57.6% of all female directors were involved in firms that make a profit compared to 56.1% of males. Yet female directors are still outnumbered with 3.3 male directors to every female director. Sarra Pound, director of Cobella, in Battersea, south-east London, said "Women were better placed to achieve a profit because they grow uset to making their money go further in their teens, to buy hair products, make-up, and clothes as well as going out". Rae Palmer, owner of Rae Palmer Hairdressing in Southsea, Hampshire, said she believed women were more successful because they love to talk. But Ray Seymour, general secretary of the National Hairdressers' Federation said "Most of the very successful salons are owned by men in a predominantly female-oriented profession, which seems to fly in the face of the survey". |
